Difference between Megapixel and Megabyte

These days people enjoying with different types digital devices, for instance, Computer, Camera, Smartphone, Tab, Video Game etc. Those all kinds of digital electronic devices are operated with digital coding. There are so many types of digital coding units in digital electronic system, among them Megapixel and Megabyte are widely used in most digital personal devices. Some people have confusion about this, what is difference between Megapixel and Megabyte? It’s better to understand briefly, what they are and what difference between them is!?

Megapixel

Megapixel is widely used in photography field, especially in camera. All you might know that, having more megapixec camera can produce more fine images. Yes, you are right but why and how to calculate megapixels? Here I’d like to write something briefly about megapixel.

A pixel is the smallest unit of Digital image data. All cameras have an image sensor to produce an actual image. A single image sensor is made by millions of pixel units. A 5 megapixel camera has an image sensor contained 5 million pixels. 10MP camera has 10MP sensor. 1 Megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels. Numerically, 1MP = 1,000,000 pixels (दश लाख पिक्सेल). More megapixel means finer and larger image. Each image has a specific Pixels dimension on the both side (length and breadth). How to calculated pixels and megapixels? See a chart below.

Megabyte

Megabyte is widely used in computer technology and also used on camera too. Megabyte is closely associated with computer RAM (Random Access Memory) and storage section. All data used in computer system is represented using two numerical values 0s and 1s, which is called Binary (बाइनरी) Digit System. There are only two possible values ‘0’ and ‘1’ in binary coding system.  Binary coding system has been developed to represent text, numbers and other types of data. Every kind of data, such as text, image, song, movie, graphics, software files take a specific space in the RAM (Random Access Memory) and HDD (Hard Disc Drive). Those occupied space is measured in Byte (बाइट) units and counted with binary (बाइनरी) digit system.

Numerically, 1000 Bytes = 1KB (Kilobyte) likewise 1000 kilobytes = 1 MB (Megabyte, मेगाबाइट). In binary digit system 1024 Bytes =1 Kilobyte and 1024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte. See a chart below.

Conclusion: Megapixel and Megabyte, both words looks like same but they have different roles in digital technology. I think, this article minimized your confusion.

Hello! Professionally I’m photographer, Photoshoper, Illustrator and graphic designer. I had taken photography training with Photojournalism in 1996. I’m self-learned Photoshoper and Illustrator. I'm fully freelancer. I love to learn new tools of Photoshop and Illustrator then create various kinds of artwork and vector graphics in my free time. On long days vacation, I would like to travel and trek high-altitude area to celebrate my leisure time. I’ve deep interest in Nature photography. Landscape and Wildlife are my favorite subjects. Moreover, I like also birding and bird’s photography. I'm general member of 'Bird Conservation Nepal' too. I am the founder of TutsGallery. I’ve founded this website to share my knowledge and experience to new generation in photography. I hope, you’ll like this. If you also like to contribute such kind of knowledge and experience, I request you, start from today and contact me. Let’s enjoy photographing!
